Call for Government Action on Climate Change

18 July 1996

Following John Gummer's call in Geneva for action on climate change,Anna Stanford, Energy Campaigner at Friends of the Earth, said:

"We welcome John Gummer's call for tougher action to slow down climate change. In particular, his recommendation for an aviation fuel tax, which is something that FOE has been demanding for a long time.

But how can we expect other countries to listen if we haven't cleaned up our act at home? The Treasury has slashed funding for energy efficiency for low income households, and support for clean energy generation will expire in two years. We want to see action, not just fine words."

NOTES TO EDITORS:

[1] Governments are meeting in Geneva for the Second Conference of the Parties to the Framework Convention on Climate Change to discuss action to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
