FOE WELCOMES LABOUR'S ENVIRONMENT SPEECH

2 October 1996

Friends of the Earth has welcomed today's pledge by Shadow Environment Secretary Michael Meacher to put "environment at the heart of our politics and at the heart of Government". Friends of the Earth described it as "the strongest environment speech by a Labour Front Bench spokesperson since Chris Smith launched 'In Trust For Tomorrow'".

However, given Labour's commitment to "base our [Labour's] policy firmly on sustainable development" it is surprising that Tony Blair made little reference to the environment in his speech yesterday and Shadow Chancellor Gordon Brown made none at all.

Uta Bellion, Campaign's Director at Friends of the Earth, said:

"This is the strongest environment speech by a Labour Front Bench spokesperson for over two years. We are delighted that Labour stand by their commitments of "In Trust for Tomorrow" as part of their programme for governance. We now expect to see these commitments translated into Labour's election manifesto."
